These days, the city feels suspended- somewhere between laughter and silence. Halloween fades into Día de Muertos, and La Paz begins to glow from within.

In Mexico, remembrance is not confined to silence. It fills streets with color, laughter, and the scent of marigolds. Día de Muertos- the Day of the Dead- is not about mourning but about continuity, a conversation between the living and those who came before us. Families build altars not to grieve, but to invite souls home- with flowers, bread, and the soft glow of candles lighting their way.

La Paz is quietly electric at the end of October. The air softens, the days shorten, and the city begins to hum- half laughter, half reverence. Here, that spirit mingles with something lighter: the playful energy of Halloween. For a few days at the turn of October, the city holds both in its hands- celebration and reflection, memory and mischief- as two worlds meet: the playful spirit of Halloween and the luminous depth of Día de Muertos.

And like everything in La Paz, the blend feels effortless.

October 31

Costumes, Candles & Seaside Trick or Treat

As the sun dips over the malecón, the city shifts. Families wander the waterfront in costume- pirates, mermaids, tiny skeletons holding glowing buckets. Cafés spill onto sidewalks; music drifts through the sea breeze.

Locals call it Noche de Brujas, but it’s Halloween in full Baja color. Expect costume parades downtown, trick-or-treating at local shops, and the Rodada de Halloween- a community bike ride that turns the streets into a glowing river of laughter and lights.

Tip: Head out around 6 PM, bring your costume (or a mask and a sense of humor), and end the night with tacos under the stars.

Altars & Remembrance

By morning, the energy softens. The scent of marigolds and copal fills the air- sweet, smoky, and alive. Families begin to build ofrendas in doorways, schools, and shopfronts: photographs, candles, sugar skulls, and pan de muerto, the soft, fragrant bread dusted with sugar and shaped with crossed bones.

This bread- eaten throughout October and offered on every altar- is both simple and profound: flour, butter, orange blossom, and memory. It represents the cycle of life and death, nourishment for both the living and the spirits who visit for the night.

The city hums quietly with preparation. Children cut papel picado; elders tell stories; strangers greet each other at flower stands where marigolds spill in rivers of gold.

Desfile de Catrinas – Malecón, 5 PM

The city’s official Festival de Día de Muertos begins with a parade from Parque Cuauhtémoc to the Kiosco del Malecón. Elegant Catrinas on foot and horseback glide through the golden light, followed by live music and dance troupes like Yolihuani and Son Mi Tierra.

It’s a photographer’s dream- the sea, the light, the slow dignity of faces painted in remembrance.

Los Altares de la Belisario – From 7 PM

When the parade ends, follow the candlelight inland to Calle Belisario Domínguez. There, the street becomes an altar- La Miserable, Patio Domínguez, La Coyota, Tiger Club and neighboring cafés transform into a block-long celebration of memory. Candles flicker beside glasses of mezcal; guitars hum; laughter and incense drift into the night.

It’s one of La Paz’s most beautiful evenings- a street glowing with both joy and reverence.

The Glow of Remembrance

By Sunday, celebration gives way to reflection. The XXV Festival Tradicional de Día de Muertos fills the esplanade of the Unidad Cultural Jesús Castro Agúndez. From 5 PM, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Aire, Grupo Folclórico Yoliztli, and Mónica Sánchez y Be Atemba bring the night to life with music, theatre, and the Pasarela de Catrinas.

Children lick sugar skulls, elders bless the altars, and strangers pause quietly before photos of the departed. The glow of candles turns the plaza into a living poem- one where death is not feared but folded into the rhythm of life.

Outside the City- Rancho Las Cruces

About forty minutes north of La Paz, Rancho Las Cruces offers a more intimate setting. From October 31 to November 2, its chapel and grounds are lined with candles and traditional altars. Guests gather for quiet ceremonies and regional food- tamales, atole, pan de muerto- honoring loved ones beneath the desert stars.

It’s an elegant, hushed celebration- the kind that lingers long after the night ends.

Remembering Light

In Mexico, death has never been the opposite of life- it’s part of it.

Día de Muertos is not about mourning; it’s about continuity. The marigold’s color represents the sun, guiding souls home. The candles show the path. The bread feeds both memory and presence.

In La Paz, those symbols live against a backdrop of sea and sand- elemental and eternal. Halloween brings laughter and costumes; Día de Muertos brings light and meaning. Together they remind us that to live fully is to remember deeply.

So bring a light jacket, an open heart, and your camera.

Walk slowly. Taste the bread. Listen to the music.
